AT Attachment. The official term for the Enhanced IDE specification, covering devices such as hard drives and CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and tape devices.
Central to the ATA system is the controller; up to two devices (master and slave) can be attached to each controller. Most current PC systems are equipped with two controllers (primary and secondary), giving a possible total of four devices. Compare this with the seven devices per controller allowed by SCSI.
