In contrast with a plug and play device (which can be configured automatically by the OS), a jumpered device must be configured manually by the user. Note that not all so-called jumpered devices must be configured via jumpers (small plastic links) on the board: later jumpered devices featured a software-programmed EEPROM which stored the configuration information on-board. However, such devices are not truly plug-and-play, since they don’t feature common detection and configuration interfaces.
