Windows NT

The development of Windows NT started in the late 1980s, and the first version (version 3.1) was released in 1992, shortly after Windows 3.1. The Windows NT development team, headed by Dave Cutler, had come to Microsoft from Digital, having previously worked on VMS. Indeed, some say that Windows NT is the next version of VMS, and VMS has seen the introduction of some of Windows NT’s features. The Windows NT kernel, currently represented by Windows 2000 and Windows XP, continues as Microsoft’s future for the Windows platform as the Windows 95 series ceases development.
